Anatomy of an affiliate link
An affiliate link is a normal URL with one extra piece of information: who sent the visitor.
https://example.com/pricing?ref=jane&utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=affiliate
- Destination — the page the visitor lands on. Any page of the site works.
- Referral parameter —
ref=janetells the merchant's tracking script which affiliate to credit. It's stored in a cookie, so the sale is attributed even if the visitor buys days later (within the program's cookie window). - UTM parameters — optional analytics tags that describe the channel and campaign.
Best practices for affiliate links
- Deep link to the most relevant page. A link to the pricing page from a comparison post converts better than a link to the homepage.
- Use one link per channel. Separate links for YouTube, your newsletter and your blog show you where your commissions really come from.
- Always disclose. Mention that the link is an affiliate link — it's required by the FTC in the US and by consumer-protection rules in the EU.
- Test before you publish. Open the link in a private window and check that the parameter is still in the URL after redirects.

FAQ
- How do I create an affiliate link?
- Join the product's affiliate program to get your affiliate code, then add it to any page URL as a query parameter — for example https://example.com/pricing?ref=yourcode. The parameter name (ref, via, aff…) depends on the affiliate platform the program uses.
- What is the difference between ?ref= and ?via=?
- Nothing functional — they're just parameter names. Each affiliate platform reads its own: Refindie uses ?ref=, Rewardful uses ?via=, and others use ?aff= or a custom name. Using the wrong one means your sales won't be credited, so always check your program's dashboard.
- Can I add UTM parameters to an affiliate link?
- Yes. UTM parameters (utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, utm_content) sit alongside your affiliate code and let the merchant — and you, if you use link analytics — see which channel drove the click. They don't affect commission attribution.
- Can I link to any page, not just the homepage?
- Usually yes. Most affiliate tracking scripts read the referral parameter on any page of the site and store it in a cookie, so deep links to pricing pages or blog posts convert better than generic homepage links.
- Is my data sent anywhere?
- No. The link and QR code are generated entirely in your browser; nothing you type is sent to Refindie's servers.
